If you write Marco on YouTube, the first suggestions you get are Mengoni and Carta. Don't stop here but go on until you find Marco Guazzone, a name that probably doesn't' tell you a lot yet, but very soon I'm sure you'll hear about.
Marco, con cui ho avuto la fortuna (e il piacere!) di scambiare quattro chiacchiere, è voce e anima degli Stag, che usciranno con il loro primo cd in autunno. Nel panorama musicale italiano Marco sembra quasi un alieno: tanta gavetta e nessuna intenzione di approdare a un talent show, un mix di sogni nel cassetto e determinazione.
Non sto a scrivere definizioni di genere ne paragoni musicali (che non piacciono nè a me nè a lui), prendetevi piuttosto 10 minuti per leggere questo post e fatevi la vostra idea. Sono super sicuro che non resterete delusi.
J: Allora Marco cominciamo con le domande semplici, mi parli un po degli Stag e del logo?
M: Il cervo con le rose è la prima cosa ad essere nata, perché l'ha disegnata mio fratello, che è un grafico, quando ho fatto il mio debutto su MTv Soundwave e il giorno della finale ho indossato la tshirt con questa immagine e da allora è stato un po un portafortuna. Mio fratello è riuscito a rendere graficamente l'idea della mia musica: il cervo che sta per la parte più rock e le rose invece per la parte più dolce e melodica. E da qui poi, visto che cervo in inglese si dice Stag è nato anche il nome del gruppo!
J: Con gli altri membri del gruppo come vi siete trovati? siete amici? vi siete trovati per caso?
M: Sarebbe bello dire che suoniamo insieme da anni, invece ho cambiato molti musicisti, i brani li scrivo io ma lavoriamo lasciando che le idee di tutti si mescolino. Andrea era venuto a sostituire il vecchio chitarrista, ma poi è rimasto ed ha dato un super contributo x dare una chiave un po più rock. Niccolò è al basso, lui fa il musicista ma anche l'attore. E poi c'è l'ultimo arrivo, Stefano alla tromba che poi in realtà è un po l'elemento jolly della band.
J: Senti Marco ho letto su di te accostamenti musicali di ogni tipo, premetto che i paragoni non mi fanno impazzire, però c'è qualche artista a cui ti senti musicalmente più vicino?
M: Tutti ci ispiriamo a qualcuno, diciamo che io sono sempre stato affascinato da chiunque sia riuscito a rendere il pianoforte uno strumento da musica rock. Quindi in primo luogo direi Chris Martin e i Coldplay, tra l'altro Parachutes è il primo cd che ho comprato. Poi nella mia top 5 ci sono i Radiohead, i Muse per la parte più rock-elettronica, poi i Sigur Ros e infine non può mancare Jeff Buckley.
J: So che hai un rapporto speciale con l'Inghilterra, che differenze hai trovato rispetto all'Italia?
M: Si si, io ho fatto molto la gavetta a Londra, perché là è più semplice suonare, ci sono dei locali apposta dove se sai suonare puoi farlo, non è come in Italia dove spesso servono le amicizie per poterlo fare. E' stata un'esperienza bellissima perché devi coinvolgere la gente solo con la voce e la tastiera, anche se gli impianti spesso fanno schifo: sei tu che devi creare un momento magico senza l'aiuto di luci o di altri effetti, ma solo con la musica. Per me la cosa più bella è suonare dal vivo, perché c'è uno scambio forte di emozioni tra tu che suoni e chi ti ascolta, si crea un qualcosa anche se siamo solo in 2 persone.
J: ora le domande difficili, tu hai scelto un percorso completamente diverso da quello dei talent show, a cui eppure molti giovani oggi ambiscono. Come mai?
M: Io non ce l'ho assolutamente con questi programmi, però quando mi è stato chiaro che non avrei potuto suonare il piano, non avrei potuto cantare le mie canzoni fin quando (se) fossi arrivato in finale, ho capito che non era un'esperienza che faceva per me.Ti plasmano lì dentro, è un percorso che è utile per chi parte da zero, ma non per chi, come me, ha già una propria base.
J: Tu ti occupi anche di musica da film, c'è un regista con il quale ti piacerebbe poter lavorare?
M: Beh, mi piacerebbe molto Tim Burton. Io adoro il suo compositore Danny Elfman che scritto le musiche per quasi tutti i suoi film.
J: guardando i tuoi video su YouTube, ho fatto caso che in alcuni sei scalzo. Come mai?
M: eheh si è vero, suono scalzo se il posto lo permette. Perché è comodo, ho più sensibilità coi pedali, se posso lo faccio perché sono cresciuto suonando scalzo in casa e mi piace poter continuare a farlo.
J: una domanda che non posso non farti: hai lavorato anche con Jay Brannan, come è andata?
M: Tutto è nato da un amico in comune. Era ancora l'epoca di Myspace,l'ho contatto dicendo che mi sarebbe piaciuto aprire il suo tour e lui mi ha risposto dicendo che sarebbe stato molto contento e così ho avuto la possibilità di suonare prima del suo concerto a Roma. Poi da li è nata un'amicizia/collaborazione e ho suonato anche in alcune date del suo tour europeo. Ho imparato tanto da Jay, dal suo modo di stare sul palco, il suo modo di fare musica solo con la voce e la chitarra è stupendo.
J: Marco veniamo alle cose serie, so che stai lavorando a un cd. Cosa c'è in cantiere?
M: si è vero, stiamo lavorando sia a un ep che ad un album, l'ep sarà probabilmente in inglese mentre l'album in italiano e usciranno in autunno. Adesso stiamo lavorando con Steve Lyon, che è un produttore inglese ed è una cosa di cui io sono contentissimo perché lui ha lavorato con un sacco di grandi artisti, da Paul McCartney ai Depeche Mode ai Subsonica e ancora stento a credere che abbia deciso di fare davvero qualcosa con noi. Quindi adesso siamo divisi con le registrazioni tra Roma e Londra, ma presto potrete ascoltare il frutto del nostro lavoro.
J: In un'ora scarsa Marco mi ha conquistato, più che un'intervista è stata una chiacchierata, siamo finiti a parlare di Chopin e Debussy e di altro che da un ragazzo di neanche 23 anni sinceramente non mi sarei aspettato. Marco mentre parla sorride spesso, ha una voce che ti cattura e ti incanta (anche se inspiegabilmente sostiene che all'inizio si imbarazzava a farla sentire agli altri..), ha i sogni negli occhi e la faccia di chi lavora sodo per realizzarli. Io ho visto tanto talento e neanche un po di presunzione. Per me tutto questo è stato solo una conferma, spero invece per voi sia stata una piacevole scoperta!

Marco, who I had the good fortune (and the pleasure too!) to chat with, is voice and heart of the Stag, which will come out with the new album the next fall. Marco in the italian music scene seems almost an alien: hard ranks and no interest for talent show, a mix of secret dreams and determination.
I'm not about to write definitions or musical comparisons (both of us can't stand!), let's take 10 minutes of your time to read this post and get you idea by yourself. I'm super confident you will not get disappointed.
J: Marco, let's start with simple questions: would you like to tell me something about the Stag project and its logo?
M: The logo is first thing to be born: my brother, who is a graphic designer, had drawned the stag with the roses when I made my debut on MTv Soundwave. The day of the final I wore the tshirt with this image, so since then it has became a sort of good luck charm. My brother has managed to make graphically the idea of my music: the stag stands for the my rock side while the roses for the gentle and melodic one. From that story then comes the name Stag for the group.
J: How you met the other group members? Are you friends? Have you meet them by accident?
M: It would be nice to say that we've played together for ages, but i changed many musicians. I usually write the songs by myself but we work letting all the ideas mixing. Andrea has come to replace the former guitarist, but then he decided to stay with us giving a super contribution to get us a bit more rock. Niccolò plays the bass, he's a musician and also an actor. And last but not least, Stefano to the trumpet that is more versatile element of the band.
J: Marco, I read about you a lot of musical combination, I must admit that comparisons don't drive me crazy, but I'd like to know if there is any artist you feel musically closer to?
M: Well, we all are inspired by someone, let's say I have always been fascinated by anyone who manages to get the piano an instrument of rock music. Firstly I'd say Chris Martin and Coldplay, by the way Parachutes is the first cd I've ever bought. Then in my personal top 5 there are also Radiohead, Muse for the most rock electronic part, Sigur Ros, and finally I can't miss Jeff Buckley.
J: I know you have a special relationship with Britain, which differences have you found between Italy and the UK?
M: Oh yes, I've done my ranks in London, because there is easier to play: there are clubs, where you can play if you worth, that's very different from Italy where you often need the right contact to play in a certain place. It was an extraordinary experience to me, because you have to involve people just with your voice and the piano even thought the audio system often sucks: it's up to you to create a magic happening without the aids of lights or other effects, but just with music. According to me the best thing ever is playing live, because there is a deep exchange of feelings between you playing and your listeners, I don't know why but something always borns even if there are only two people.
J: Now the harder questions: you chose a path completely different from the one of talent shows, which many guys todays aspire to.. Why?
M: I'm not against these shows, but when it was clear that I could not play the piano, I could not sing my own songs until (if..) I would reach the final, I realized that it was not an experience suitable to me. They shape you, it is a path useful for those who start from scratch, but not for someone like me, that already has his own base.
J: You also deal with movies soundtracks, is there a director you'd love to work with?
M: Well, I'd really like to work with Tim Burton. I love his composer Danny Elfman who has written musics for almost Burton's films.
J: Watching your videos on YouTube, I noticed that in some you are barefoot. I just wonder why?
M: Eheh that's true, I like to play barefoot if the place is nice. It's comfortable, I have more contact with piano's pedals. I do it, if I can, because i grew up playing barefoot at home and I like to continue to play this way.
J: A question that I can not to ask you: you worked with Jay Brannan, how did things go?
M: Yes, everything started from a mutual friend. It still was the MySpace era and i contacted him saying that I would like to open his tour and he just replied by saying he would have been very happy. So I got the chance to play before his concert in Rome. Then from this concert born a friendship/partnership and I also played in some date of his european tour. I learned a lot from Jay , by his way of staying on the stage. His way of playing just with voice and guitar is amazing.
J: Well, let's speak about serious things: I know you're working on a new album. Would you like to tell us something about?
M: Yes, that's true, we are working on an ep and on an album: the ep will probably be in english while the album will be in italian and both will be released in autumn. We are now working with Mr Steve Lyon, who is a british producer, and I'm very happy, because he has worked with a lot of great artists, like Paul McCartney, Depeche Mode and Subsonica, and I still hardly believe he really decided to do something with us. So now we are divided between London and Rome, but soon you will enjoy the fruits of our labor.
J: In just an hour Marco moved me. It should have been an interview but it resulted a chat, we ended up talking about Chopin and Debussy, and a lot more that I really did not expect from a 22 years old guy. Marco smiles often while he speaks, he has a voice that captures and enchants (though inexplicably he claims that at first he was embarrassed to be listened to). You can read dreams in his eyes and in his face the signs of hard work to achieve them. In him I've seen very much talent and no sign of arrogance. To me all this was just a confirmation, I hope for you it is a nice surprise!
