SILVIO GIORDANO: CONFESSIONS OF A NOT BANAL MIND

Provocatorio e irriverente, cinico e scandaloso, sacrilego e impertinente. Ma si può ancora descrivere così il lavoro di un artista? Osserviamo con occhio più a-morale le opere di Silvio Giordano, artista che riflette su globalizzazione, massificazione e consumismo.

Provocative and irreverent, cynical and scandalous, profane and impertinent. But can we still describe this way the work of an artist? Let's see with a not-morale eye works of Silvio Giordano, an artist who reflects on globalization, mass production and consumerism.

Realizza fotografie, video, sculture, installazioni e performance, ma soprattutto non perde mai di vista temi sociologici attuali, che sublima in oggetti estetici in bilico tra ironia noir e divertissment impegnato.

Il suo ultimo intervento a Roma è stato a Luglio 2011, in una delle celle del Forte Prenestino, con The message, una scultura/installazione formata da due vere teste di maiale appese al muro a mo’ di trofeo. Qual è il messaggio? Il riferimento immediato è agli avvertimenti di stampo malavitoso, ma più che una denuncia dei comportamenti omertosi l’opera sembra un monito a più largo spettro: se la testa di maiale mozzata nel linguaggio mafioso significa “stai alle regole!”, l’artista non vuole certo richiamarci all’ordine, bensì mostrarci impietosamente una metafora della nostra società, in cui, ad esempio, non adeguarsi allo Spread imposto determina la caduta di un governo.

He produces photographs, videos, sculptures, installations and performances, but he also never loses sight of the current sociological issues, that he sublimes in aesthetic objects in balance between noir humor and committed divertissment.

His last work in Rome was in one of the cells of the Forte Prenestino in July 2011 with The message, a sculpture/installation which consists of two real pig heads hung on the wall like a trophy. What is the message? The immediate reference is to the gangster-style warnings, but more than a complaint of conspiratorial behavior, the work seems to be a broad-spectrum monition: if the severed pig's head in the mobster language means "stay at rules!", the artist no way wishes recall us to order, but he mercilessly shows us a metaphor for our society, where, for example, the non-compliance with the imposed Spread determines the fall of a government.

La denuncia al sistema politico e di potere vigente del resto è ricorrente nelle opere di Silvio, che dichiara: “La dittatura è una realtà, la libertà non esiste”. Abbiamo così Nucleo familiare, “(…) un tavolo dove una grande famiglia si unisce compatta e tesse indisturbata il destino del mondo svuotando la democrazia di significato”;


Anyway the complaint to the existing political system and power is recurrent in Silvio’s works; in fact he declares: "Dictatorship is a fact, there is no liberty". So we have Familiar nucleus, "(...) a table where a large family combines compact and undisturbed weaves the fate of the world emptying of meaning the democracy";

Tank man, dove l’artista si propone come novello “rivoltoso sconosciuto” e affronta i nuovi mostri della guerriglia quotidiana (guarda qui il video dell'originale "tank man" a cui l'artista si è ispirato);

Tank Man, where the artist proposes himself as new "unknown rebel" and faces the new monsters of daily guerrilla (look here the video of the original "tank man" which inspired the artist);

Habitat, un alveare di bare ispirato alla teoria catastrofista secondo cui le api stanno scomparendo e che ricorda “la città della libertà” descritta nel film La montagna sacra di Alejandro Jodorowsky, appunto un fitto reticolo di bare ben pubblicizzato per convincere gli operai di non aver bisogno né di una casa né di famiglia (guarda qui il filmato).

Habitat, a coffins hive inspired by the catastrophist theory that bees are disappearing and that reminds "the city of freedom" described in the film The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky, just a dense coffins network well-advertised to convince workers do not need neither a home nor family (look here the video).

Questi lavori si prestano anche ad una lettura ambientalista, tema peraltro affrontato in maniera più diretta in un recente lavoro presentato a Los Angeles, Raw, un prosciutto appeso nella sala espositiva; un vero prosciutto, ma con una caratteristica inedita: l’artista gli ha fatto montare una protesi dentaria da un odontotecnico professionista.


These studies also lend themselves to a reading of environmentalist, theme also addressed more directly in a recent work presented in Los Angeles, Raw, a ham hanging in the exhibition hall, a real ham, but with an unusual feature: the artist made it fit a denture by a dental professional.

Così il prosciutto ora ha una bocca. Non parla, ma riesce comunque a comunicarci con la sua presenza perturbante. Sembra fissata in un urlo silenzioso, come quello degli animali costretti in allevamenti intensivi per soddisfare i nostri ormai innaturali bisogni indotti. Allevamenti in cui, tra l’altro, il bestiame viene cibato con farine animali e dunque costretto ad un inconsapevole cannibalismo. Questo prosciutto (geneticamente) modificato è solo un’ipotesi fantasmagorica su un possibile futuro OGM, fatto di mutanti (vedi Sereno mutante)


So now the ham has a mouth. It doesn’t speak, but it still communicate with his perturbing presence. It seems fixed in a silent scream, like that of animals forced in intensive farming to meet our induced needs, now unnatural. Farms where, among other things, the cattle are nourished with animal meal and thus forced to an unwitting cannibalism. This ham (genetically) modified is just a phantasmagoric hypothesis of a possible GMO future, made up of mutants (see Quiet mutant)

In questa linea di pensiero non poteva ovviamente mancare un attacco al consumismo. Così Silvio Giordano ha preso di mira anche uno dei prodotti americani più internazionalmente diffusi, il chewing gum, e con Big Bubble Banal è finito sulla copertina della rivista del Collettivomensa dedicata al tema del disgusto.

In this line of thought obviously could not miss an attack on consumerism. So Silvio Giordano has targeted one of the most internationally popular American products, chewing gum, and the Big Bubble Banal is finished on the cover of the Collettivomensa magazine dedicated to the theme of the disgust.

Quale sarà la prossima mossa? Impossibile prevederlo…
